Richard Sierra's East/West West/East

●   # Rank

Since its installation in 2014, East-West/West-East has established itself as a well-known landmark in Qatar. Richard Serra, one of the most notable living sculptors, created the piece of art. East-West/West-East is more of a testament to Richard Serra's ability to manipulate space than any of his other works conceptually.

He built four steel sculptures in a precise alignment between the Brouq Nature Reserve's gypsum cliffs. In Islamic tradition, the number seven has a specific significance. In Islamic tradition, the number seven has a specific significance. With this sculpture made of seven steel plates, Richard Serra pays respect to the culture. Two of the four statues are 14.7 meters tall, and the others are 16.7 meters high. Even so, they are all on the same level as one another since they have been topographically corrected.

The pillars were built to create a straight path between the eroding cliffs synonymous with the area's geology. Both residents and tourists come to the location in significant numbers to view the installations. The pillars grab attention on the serene surroundings of the cliff and the coast.

How to explore Richard Sierra's East-West/West-East?

  • The pillars are translucent, so you may interact with them without being intimidated.
  • According to the artist, the colors of the four pillars fluctuate depending on the weather, going from gray to orange to brown to dark amber. Come here to spend the entire day and watch the colors change.
  • The pillars can absorb enough heat in the summer to prevent bare hands from touching them. Be mindful of this circumstance!
  • Observe the artwork's desert-like depiction of the social, political, and economic context. Zekreet civilization has been given the expression ''global village,''. So, this sculpture illustrates how you are living in a global desert.
  • Take photos of the land's topography to capture how it enhances the huge, desolate area in the middle of the desert. The outcome is magnificent and, despite being modern, timeless.
  • The striking sculpture is located at a one hour distance from MIA Park. Visit the park that faces the water, embracing the surrounding green-blue beauty and enchanting you as you unwind by the sea.
  • Visit the neighboring Ras Brouq site to look at an ancient landscape through stunning and recognizable rock formations.
